Don't let this stop you from playing or joining a band. You can get by very well with cheap guitars until the time comes that you can afford to get the guitar of your dreams. You can take any guitar that plays decently and make it better.
Cheap guitars are not always known for their great sound, but there are some ones out there that may surprise you. Some 'copies' have actually become very popular because they sound great. These are typically cheap guitars that mimic more expensive ones in both sound and look. They are not going to be as nice, but some of them become good guitars on their own merits.
Think of these like copies or knock offs of designer handbags. They are made by someone else, with less materials, but they still do the job. Some guitar players hang on to copies no matter how much money they have because they have learned to love what they can get out of them.
Your cheap guitars can get better just by having someone set them up for you. There are small things that can be changed to make them play more easily, like filing down some frets that don't work well under your fingers, by lowering or raising the strings, or even by putting in quality pickups.
These things can change how cheap guitars play and feel under your fingers, but can also change the sound you get out of them. Simply changing the type of size of strings that you use can make a small difference too.
The sound you get out of cheap guitars is not just coming from that guitar – it also comes from your amplifier and your effects. These things can make a rather blah guitar sound great, especially when playing live. Choose to spend a little more on your pedals to get more of the sound that you want.
Your cheap guitars may not sound so cheap any longer if you get the right ones. Get a quality amplifier as well, as this is far cheaper than spending more on the guitar that you want but can not yet afford.
Cheap guitars can be a great investment. Use these with the right set up and the right gear while you start out. Put away money you make from playing to save for the guitar that you really want. In the meantime, you may find that playing your less expensive model is actually not all that bad, and you may find that getting a good sound out of it is just as much about you as it is what you play and what you play through.
The truth is that most musicians on a local or regional level have cheaper guitars that they love and they really don't need anything else.
